SOME
TIME
ago without warning, I was suddenly
crippled by a painful attack of sciatica. Never mind the details.
After years of independence, I found myself dependent upon others.
For several weeks I was mostly helpless. 'It was, as they say,
a learning experience. It was also humbling. I have rediscovered
the essential kindness of people. Time after time, when I would
be struggling with the wheelchair, a total stranger would stop
by my side. ”May I give you a push?” There’s a motto for the nation.
It’s something all of us can do: we can give our fellow man a
little push. James Kilpatrick,

I walked in a desert. And
I cried, "Ah, God, take me from this place!" A voice said, "It
is no desert." I cried, "Well, but--- "The sand, the heat, the
vacant horizon." A voice said, "It is no desert." - Stephan
Crane, "The Black Riders and Other Lines", 1895

I was in the darkness:
I
could not see my words Nor the wishes of my heart. Then suddenly
there was a great light--- "Let me into the darkness again." -
